Linconshire-Riverwoods firefighter/paramedics responded about 3:00 a.m. Tuesday to a basement fire in a large luxury home in the 1000 block of Hiawatha Lane.

Firefighters noticed the floor was soft and evacuated. One firefirefighter had to evacuate out of a window, while others were able to leave out the front door. The firefighter operations then went defensive with firefighters halting any interior attack operations. Parts of the first floor near the stairwell to the basement eventually collapsed, which is common in basement fires. Heat and flames rise near the stairwell, destroying the floor near the stairwell first.

Firefighters fought the basement fire with cellar nozzles, but the fire extended to the first floor of the home. The fire department response was elevated to a third alarm about 5:45 a.m. Tuesday.

Firefighters were attempting to use expansion foam extinguish the fire.

Traffic delays occurred along Riverwoods Road between Deerfield Road and Half Day Road (Route 22). Staging for extra fire equipment was at Riverwoods Road and Sunset Trail.

Firefighters from Buffalo Grove, Palatine, Glenview, Grayslake, Northbrook, Prospect Heights, Wheeling, and others assisted Lincolnshire-Riverwoods firefighters. A Lake County foam truck also responded to the scene.
