‘Don’t Be the Guy’ White Sox Nerves Squelched for Perfect Game for Phil Humber

Chicago White Sox pitcher Phil Humber pitched the 21st perfect game in MLB history, defeating the Seattle Mariners 4-0 in Seattle on Saturday, April 21, 2012.

The clinching moment for a perfect game [VIDEO] arrived with a 3-2 slider and two out in the bottom of the ninth. A check swing by Brendan Ryan resulted in a short protest to the home plate umpire after the called strike, until Ryan realized he had a drop third strike situation. As soon as he saw Chicago White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski scrambling to get the ball, he interrupted his protest and bolted toward first base. Pierzynski’s throw beat Ryan to first.

The perfect game by Humber and the White Sox defense involved a no-hitter and a shutout with 27 batters up, and 27 batters down in nine innings.
