Deavonte Cain, 17, Turns Himself in After Bartlett Shooting at Eastern & Oneida

Deavonte Cain, 17, turned himself in to Bartlett police and has been charged as an adult with aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated discharge of a firearm. He is a suspect in the shooting of a 17-year-old male high school student at the intersection of Eastern and Oneida near Bartlett Elementary School.

Bartlett police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 7:32 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a from the victim who said he had just been shot by a person on a bicycle near Eastern and Oneida. The victim reported he was shot in the upper back.

Deavonte Cain, who turned himself in to police, is believed to be the shooting suspect, who fled eastbound on a bicycle near North Avenue immediately after shooting. Bartlett police are investigating and working to track down the location of the weapon discharged on Tuesday evening.

A witness near the crime scene reported he heard seven shots fired. The victim was hit once in the back, upper shoulder area.

Cain was out on bail at the time of the shooting. He was previously charged with aggravated battery of a police officer, resisting or obstructing a police officer causing injury, and resisting or obstructing a police officer. According to an Elgin police report, Cain elbowed an Elgin police officer in the right eye and then hit him as police were investigating a shooting that injured a 15-year-old boy in September 2011. The shooting that injured the 15-year-old teen occurred minutes after shots were fired about a mile away, near an elementary school — Gifford Elementary School.

Cain’s bail was originally set at $50,000 in that case, but Cain was released by Kane County court after posting bond of $250 on March 16, 2012. Cain was scheduled for court April 19 2012.
