A brush fire at Deer Grove Forest Preserve that burned about 10 acres is reported to have been caused by cigarettes that were not discarded properly in the forest preserve.

Lake Zurich firefighters responded to a grass fire about 4:35 p.m. Saturday just south of Lake Cook Road and Dee Lane. Firefighters reported a 25′ x 50′ area of grass burning at the north end of Deer Grove Forest Preserve. The fire was in forest preserve property and Cook Cook Forest Preserve officials were notified. About 5:02 p.m. Saturday, Lake Zurich Fire-Rescue crews called for a second engine, and Palatine Fire Department responded immediately with a Quint and a Battalion Chief. Palatine police and Cook County Forest Preserve police also immediately responded. Eventually a MABAS Mutual Aid Box Alarm was called to stop the fire.

One Cook County Wildland firefighter was seen by paramedics for possible exposure after his legs were soaked with water for a prolonged period in mid-50°F and mid-40°F temperatures. He was believed to have been transported to Northwest Community Hospital after 10:00 p.m., but this was not confirmed by officials.

On Sunday two additional brush fires erupted in the area. A fire in the Potawatomi Forest Preserve erupted twice near Dundee Road and Portwine — once about 10:30 a.m. and once about 4:10 p.m. A brush fire also erupted in Lake Barrington near 23511 North Old Barrington Road. The second Poawatomi brush fire and the Lake Barrington brush fire were both MABAS Box Alarms.
