Gas Leak at Apartment Building on North Bloomington Ave Near Lake Cook Rd, Arlington Heights

Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 8:45 AM Saturday August 11, 2018 to a report of a smell of gas on the inside of a multi-residential apartment building, 4232 North Bloomington Avenue Arlington Heights, Il. The first crew on arrival reported no odor of gas outside.

Interior firefighters reported an odor of gas on the inside of a multi-residential apartment building.

Weather at NWS O’Hare was reported WIND NW 5 MPH 78°F at 8:51 a.m.

Weather at NWS Chicago Executive Airport was reported WIND N 3 MPH 78°F at 8:52 a.m.

Evacuations were in progress about 9:05 a.m., and ventilation of at least one apartment unit was immediately underway. Firefighters also charged a hose line as a precaution in case of ignition with explosion and fire.

Police were requested to respond to the scene to assist with evacuation. At one point firefighters had to move back some people who smoking cigarettes on a small hillside near the building about 9:33 a.m.

Firefighters upgraded the alarm response to a Code 3 response as a precaution for firefighting response and for extra personnel to assist with evacuation.

Firefighters shut off all gas meters that service the 4232 building, and were investigating whether the gas leak was cause by a stove left on, or a leak in a gas pipe behind a wall.

Nicor was on scene by about 9:37 a.m.

The hazard was resolved by about 10:00 a.m. and fire companies started returning about 10:11 a.m. Information was initially unavailable whether repairs were needed, and whether gas service was immediately turned back on at the affected building. Firefighters and Nicor were still working to isolate the source of the gas leak after 10:40 a.m.

At about 10:57 a.m. residents were allowed to return to their apartment units.
