#ad▼

Palatine police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 2:08 p.m. Saturday to a report of a vehicle vs. pedestrian incident at Northwest Highway and Plum Grove Road. Emergency responders received a report that a pedestrian was stuck under a white van, and that bystanders were attempting to flip the van off of the pedestrian before firefighter/paramedics arrived.

Firefighter/paramedics arrived within three minutes, and had a 15-year-old victim, who was actually a cyclist, rescued/extricated from underneath the vehicle by about 2:17 p.m. Saturday. Firefighter/paramedics used specialized rescue airbags to carefully lift the vehicle off of the victim.

No official word on the severity of injuries, but it is apparent that the injuries are non-life-threatening.

The van’s driver, Gilberto Vaquero, of Palatine was ticketed for driving without a valid driver’s license, and failure to yield to a cyclist in a crosswalk.

Northwest Highway was closed in both directions for a short time, and was re-opened about 2:33 p.m.
