VIDEO: Police pursuit and arrest aftermath at 1701 East Woodfield Road, Schaumburg.
Schaumburg police investigators reported witnessing a ruse burglary in progress about 3:35 p.m. Tuesday at Spring Creek Circle and Corporate Crossings in Schaumburg. Police observed a subject go into a house, exit quickly, and flee in a white Ford Escape at a high rate of speed. Four suspects in the white Ford Explorer headed toward Martingale, made a left turn and headed toward Higgins Road. Police investigators followed in an unmarked detective’s car. At about 3:36 p.m. suspects at Higgins Road took a right turn and got on to southbound Route 53 from eastbound Higgins Road. The suspects came up on Biesterfield Road in about two minutes and exited on Biesterfield Road — then headed westbound. The suspects turned right on Rohlwing Road, headed north on Rohlwing Road and returned to Higgins Road (unsure on exact route to Higgins Road). The suspects then cut through the Patrick Volvo dealership and headed north on Mall Drive. Shortly before the Patrick Volvo ‘cut-through’, a marked police officer joined the pursuit. A minor crash with a red car occurred at the intersection of Mall Drive and Woodfield Road. The suspects continued in their white Ford Explorer eastbound on Woodfield Road, but were cornered by a marked Schaumburg Police squad car with a minor crash occurring in front of the 1701 East Woodfield Road building about 3:47 p.m. Tuesday.
About this time Christina Santiago was driving westbound on Woodfield Road, when she saw police cars pulling up behind her on westbound Woodfield Road and more police cars coming toward her direction on eastbound Woodfield Road. Over her left shoulder, she could see that suspects in a white Ford Escape were arrested in the street. She continued to an appointment she had inside the 1701 East Woodfield Road building and parked her vehicle in the back of the building. She came up to the front to see what was happening and learned that the police were chasing burglary suspects.
Max Milstein was working in his southwest corner office at Wyatt Austin Jeweler in the 1701 East Woodfield Road building when he heard sirens and saw the police pursuit of the white Ford Escape heading northbound on Mall Drive. He hurried to the front of the building to see if they passed the front of the building, when he heard the crash outside. When he got outside, the suspects were already on the ground with police surrounding them with their guns drawn.
Several people watched the pursuit — complete with two crashes and arrests — from upper floors of the 1701 building. Milstein said the police quickly took the suspects away in handcuffs. They were transported to Schaumburg Police Department. Santiago said that the person that was hit in the red car was able to walk to a Schaumburg Fire Department rescue-ambulance with firefighter/paramedics at the side of the accident victim. There were no known reports of injuries to any police officers.
Illinois State Police, Cook County Sheriff’s deputies, Hoffman Estates police and Woodfield Mall Security assisted Schaumburg police officers.
Schaumbug police were also securing the crime scene at Spring Creek Creek Circle and Corporate Crossing in Schaumburg.
Ruse burglaries are a problem throughout Chicagoland with offenders posing as roofers, city or village employees, publics works employees, water repairman and other fake characters. They distract homeowners while other offenders go into the house and grab jewelry, money and other items. When the partners get the proceeds of the ruse burglary, they flee.
