Lake County Sheriff’s deputies and Gurnee firefighter/paramedics responded about 4:35 p.m. Saturday July 28, 2018 to a report of a personal injury head-on crash in the area of Route 45 north of West Cottage Avenue, Warren Township.

The first Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy arrived and found a small fire in the engine compartment of the Toyota. The Sheriff’s Deputy was able to successfully extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher.

UPDATE: A 70 year-old female driver of a Toyota Corolla has died, according to an update from the Lake County Sheriff Office Sunday morning.

A second ambulance was requested by 4:45 p.m. Also, firefighter/paramedics had to work on popping a vehicle door to access one of the patients.

The driver of a Toyota Corolla suffered critical, life-threatening injuries. The driver of a Kia Soul suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Both drivers were transported to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Preliminary investigation shows a 2011 Kia Soul, driven by a male juvenile of Round Lake Beach, was traveling northbound on Route 45. For an unknown reason, the driver of the Kia crossed the double-yellow center lane divider and entered the southbound lane of traffic. The Kia Soul struck a southbound 2003 Toyota Corolla, driven by a 70-year-old female of Grayslake.

The crash is being investigated by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit. There is a slight curve on US 45 south of Cottage Avenue, where the Speed Limit is 45 MPH.
