Facebook friends and fans across the Twittersphere are mourning the loss of Heidi, the cross-eyed German opossum whose cute but confused countenance warmed hearts around the world.
The Leipzig Zoo reports that Heidi, the heartwarming opossum had been listless and unable to move for several weeks. Efforts to feed her failed. At three-and-a-half-years-old, Heidi was euthanized after repeated attempts to treat her.
The Leipzig Zoological Garden, or the Leipzig Zoo, was opened in Leipzig, Germany on June 9, 1878. Leipzig Zoo was taken over by the city of Leipzig in 1920 after World War I and now covers about 225,000 m² and contains more than 2,000 animals of 500 different species. Leipzig Zoo is famous for its large carnivore exhibit, and has bred more than 2,000 lions, 250 rare Siberian tigers, and other carnivores such as bears.
