Arlington Heights police responded about 4:50 p.m. Monday to a report of reckless driving on Northwest Highway from Arthur Avenue. Police received report that a red sports car with a black top was being driven recklessly and that the vehicle almost hit another vehicle head on. The vehicle was last seen heading westbound on Northwest Highway. Less than 10 minutes later police received a call that two males were parked in a red Mazda Miata at Walgreens at Northwest Highway and Dryden. One of the subjects appeared to be “under the influence of medication” and was reported to be going in and out of consciousness. Arlington Heights Fire Department firefighter/paramedics were called to the scene. About 5:00 p.m. Monday police received a report that two males appeared to be using drugs in the red Mazda Miata.

The Mazda Miata exited the Walgreens parking lot before police and firefighter/paramedics arrived. Several police units were searching the area, as far west as downtown Arlington Heights. An alert police officer pulled up behind the vehicle on Northwest Highway, just east of Kensington — the 700 block of East Northwest Highway. Upon discovery of the Miata, the officer discovered the two male subjects and also discovered that the driver of the Miata rear-ended the vehicle in front of the Miata. No injuries were reported in the crash.

The passenger was mouthing off to police and the driver appeared to be groggy and unstable. Both were walked a short distance to a parking lot under their own power in the 700 block of East Northwest Highway. A field sobriety test was given to the driver, and he was arrested on suspicion of DUI. The passenger, who was seated against the building, appeared to have been released.

The driver was transported in custody to Northwest Community Hospital and was later transported in custody to Arlington Heights Police Department.

No word if police found any drugs in the vehicle, put the police inspected a plastic bag and the clothing and pockets of both subjects while wearing gloves for sharp needles protection.
