Three Bands of Storms with Severe Lightning, Lightning Strikes in Region

Two of three bands of thunderstorms with severe lightning have passed Arlington Heights and the northwest suburbs. The first band passed through at about 11:15 a.m. Sunday. The second band of severe weather, which passed through at noon Sunday, activated a Severe Thunderstorm Warning from the National Weather Service.

A third band of severe weather with lightning is expected to cross Arlington Heights between 1:15 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. The National Weather Service NEXRAD radar image shows embedded severe weather affecting most of northern Illinois with thundershowers also affecting the entire area. Rain and thundershowers are with possible embedded severe weather are expected for at least the next three to four hours.


Palatine Fire Department responded to a report of a house struck by lightning with a tree through the roof of a house in the 300 block of South Drovers Lane. Lightning damaged the roof with structural damage and charring. Firefighters on the scene reported a light haze and no active fire. Firefighters were searching the house for hidden fire.

A townhouse was also struck by lightning in the 300 block of Somerset in Vernon Hills. Countryside Fire Protection District called an extra alarm for fire in an attic of a two-story multi-family structure. Firefighters from Lake Forest, Mundelein, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods and others assisted Countryside Fire Protection District.

A large luxury home was also struck by lightning in the 3800 block of Muirwood Court in Long Grove. Firefighter first on the scene reported smoke from the attic and later reported an attic fire. Firefighters from Arlington Heights, Libertyville, Prospect Heights and others assisted Long Grove firefighters.

An extra alarm was also called by by Barrington-Countryside Fire Department for a fire in the 1200 block of MacAlpin Drive in Inverness.

Streets closed down for flooding near Wheeling Road and Euclid Avenue.

A Tornado Warning was issued at 1:00 p.m. for Kankakee County until 1:15 p.m. based on doppler radar imaging.
