CBS Chicago: A man is in critical condition after being shot by a Chicago Police officer.

Chicago police report that at about 9:30 p.m. Monday July 1, 2018, a CPD officer shot a 17 year-old boy who had approached his patrol car with a gun outside a Family Dollar store in the block of 7900 South Yates Boulevard. The crime scene is located in the South Shore neighborhood at the border with the South Chicago neighborhood.

The Chicago Police officer was sitting in his vehicle in the Dollar Store parking lot at the northwest corner of Yates Boulevard and 79th Street, when he was approached by a male who pointed a gun at him. The officer then drew his weapon and shot the male, who was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition.

A gun was recovered on scene, and the suspect carrying the gun was identified as 17-year-old Kevon Purell.

As a normal operating procedure in a police-involved shooting, the police officer will be placed on administrative leave for 30 days. Chicago police detectives and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) are investigating.

About a year ago on Thursday July 27, 2017 just before 2:30 a.m., a Chicago Fire Engine 126 windshield was hit by a bullet, and a firefighter was grazed by flying glass from the gunshot at Yates Boulevard and 79th Street.
