Prospect Heights firefighter/paramedics and police responded about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday to an attached garage fire in the 400 block of North Schoenbeck. Police arrived shortly before firefighters and reported the garage fully-involved. Firefighters reported a fully-involved garage fire with extension into a two-story home on the west side of Schoenbeck. High winds from the east were fanning the fire. Winds were reported to be steady at 15-20 mph with gusts of 23-25 mph during the fire (WEATHER DATA May 24, 2011). A common wall between the attached garage and the roof gable on the north side of the house were on fire early — spreading from the attached garage to the house. A witness in the neighborhood said a loud explosion was heard before the garage erupted in flames.

No injuries to residents or firefighters were reported at the house, which had a FOR SALE sign in the front yard.

Prospect Heights firefighters immediately had two lines on the fire. Firefighters connected to a hydrant about 500-1,000 feet north of the burning house near Betsy Ross School and MacArthur Middle School. Firefighters initially attacked the fire from the outside and the inside, but when fire started showing through the roof, interior firefighters were called out of the house. Firefighters went into a defensive mode temporarily.

A box alarm was requested about 2:35 p.m. Firefighters from Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Des Plaines, Elk Grove Village, Elk Grove Township, Glenview, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Long Grove, Mount Prospect, North Maine, Northbrook, Northfield, Palatine, Palatine Rural, Rolling Meadows, and Wheeling.
