Scores of websites and Internet services like Foursquare and Reddit crashed or had limited availability Thursday because of problems at a data center run by Amazon.

An outage described by Amazon as “instance connectivity, latency and error rates” was first disclosed early Thursday morning.

Many Web companies use Amazon’s cloud-based service to serve their Web sites, applications and files. Amazon’s cloud customers affected include Foursquare, Quora.com, Reddit.com, Loosecubes, GroupMe.com, Scvngr.com, Pfizer and Nasdaq.

Apparently a data center in Northern Virgina was involved in the interruption of service.
