Dog Killed in House Fire on Holyoke Ct Schaumburg

Schaumburg police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 4:30 a.m. Sunday to a house fire next to 810 Holyoke Court. En route firefighters received a report that two people were possibly inside. Police and firefighters arrived to find a multi-level house with heavy fire. When police arrived first, they learned that one person might be trapped inside. Rescue personnel then learned that all people were out of the house.

Just after 4:35 a.m. Sunday the firefighter operations went to a defensive mode with heavy fire reported on the first and second floor. Just before 4:40 a.m. a box alarm was called for mutual aid from other towns to the fire scene and for station coverage. About 4:40 a.m. it was confirmed that all occupants were out of the house. Firefighters fought the fire with three handlines, especially from the rear of the house, and were attempting to enter the home for interior attack at about 4:45 a.m. Just after 4:45 a.m. the fire was reported in the attic and firefighters were working to keep the fire from going through the roof.

The aerial from Schaumburg Truck 52 was raised about 4:50 a.m. Just after 4:50 a.m. firefighters learned that the stairway to the second floor was completely burned through — interior firefighters were ordered to stay off the second floor. Firefighter operations also began at the front of the house.

Just after 5:10 a.m. observers on the ladder tower platform observed fire just starting to come through some vents on the roof on the front of the house. A few minutes later firefighter observers on the tower platform noticed fire coming through the ridge of the roof. The ladder truck was holding back on water deluge while firefighters on the ground with handlines were attacking the ceiling and attack from below — some while supported from ladders fixed to all sides of the house.

Just after 5:30 a.m., the fire started “free-burning” through through the roof. Truck 52 put their aerial ladder on the front roof of the house about three minutes later.

At about 5:40 a.m. electricity was shut down, bringing both utilities gas and electric off. Firefighters were also made aware that the main truck ladder was on the ‘A-B’ side (front-right side). At this point there was particular concern that firefighters have egress to ladders, if the roof or second floor became unstable. Window frames were also removed deliberately so that firefighters and their SCBA air packs would not get stuck on the window frames if they had to get out in a hurry.

When Schaumburg Fire Department called an extra alarm (box alarm) for the fire, fire departments from Arlington Heights (ambulance), Bartlett (ambulance), Elk Grove Village (engine, truck), Elk Grove Township (ambulance) Hanover Park, Hoffman Estates (truck), Palatine Rural (ambulance), Prospect Heights, Rolling Meadows (ambulance and engine), Streamwood and others assisted Schaumburg Fire Department by responding to the fire scene or providing station coverage.

One person was reported injured, but the extent of the injuries have not been confirmed. A Schaumburg fire investigator was called to the scene, and a Schaumburg police evidence technician was called to the scene.

A dog was reported killed in the fire.

Firefighters were still overhauling burnt debris from the inside of the house at 8:45 a.m. Sunday.
