A crowded ferry caught fire in Indonesia early on Friday, killing at least 13 people and sending panicked passengers jumping into the sea, officials said. Nearly 200 people were injured, some critically.

Eleven people were killed and more than 400 others were rescued from the sea between the islands of Java and Sumatra after they were forced to jump to safety from a burning car ferry in early morning darkness.

Less than an hour earlier, at least three people were killed and 46 injured when an intercity train struck a stationary train head on at a station in the town of Banjar, West Java Province, slightly more than 200 miles to the east.
