Niles police responded just after 9:40 a.m. Tuesday to an assault and robbery of a Nile Police Department community service officer at the intersection of Davis Street and Grace Avenue.

Two men asked the civilian officer, who was not in uniform, for directions when he stopped at a stop sign. The unarmed community service officer (CSO) had been making routine rounds to Village of Niles offices and locations to pick up cash and make a deposit at the bank.

A first man asked the directions, then a second man approached with a knife and demanded money. The CSO was stabbed in the shoulder and pepper-sprayed. Next the armed robbers took the deposit bags from the CSO’s car and fled. Investigators are investigating whether other offenders were been involved.

No description of the offenders has been released by police.

The CSO is reported in stable condition.

Some communities use CSO’s to make the ‘bank run’ and some police department have armed police officers make the ‘bank run.’
