It could be days before icy, treacherous conditions improve for areas of the South hit by a wintry blast that sent cars sliding off the road, emptied grocery shelves and had officials nervously watching ice-laden powerlines and tree limbs.

Heavy snow and ice in the south makes an an unusual 1-11-11. Six-plus inches of snow in parts of the mountains of Georgia, 3 to 5 inches in north Atlanta metro, 2 to 3 inches inside ‘the Perimeter’, and 1 to 2 inches in the south metro area.

Atlanta’s normally bustling downtown area was nearly deserted for the second day in a row Tuesday. The Georgia Department of Transportation is bringing in crews to help deal with the ice and snow that continue to coat highways.
