A monster of a lake effect snow hit northern Cook County and Lake County Christmas night. The heaviest lake effect snow was up near the Illinois-Wisconsin border with about 10 inches, but Arlington Heights also had a good amount of lake effect snow with just under 6 inches falling.

Traffic was heavy about 10:30 p.m. for those going home from family Christmas gathering and snow was falling heavy with quarter-mile visibilities with snow falling at a rate of one to three inches per hour.

Three crashes occurred late night in Arlington Heights — a hit-and-run at Rand Road west of Hintz Road just before 10:00 p.m., a crash at Lake Cook and Wilke Road about 10:20 p.m., and a crash at Vail Avenue and Northwest Highway just about 11:10 p.m. All crashes involved injuries. At the hit-and-run crash at Rand west of Hintz Road, one driver fled on foot into the cemetery north of Rand Road. Police had a decent track on the male driver with two K-9 units, but he may have gotten into a car that picked him up on Kennicott just North of Hintz Road. Police called off the search after about one hour.

One car also slid into a ditch off of Palatine Road, just east of Route 53 about 11:20 p.m.

A band of frigid weather snaking its way up the East Coast Sunday threatened to bring blizzards and a foot of snow to New York City and New England, while several states to the South made emergency declarations. New York City has a Blizzard Warning Sunday with Winter Storm Warnings covering areas from Georgia to New England. Major airlines canceled many flights.


Before heading heading to the Mid-Atlantic and New England, a monster winter storm dumped several inches of snow on Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
