Friday Was Traffic Day on the Unusual & Dangerous Side for Northwest Suburbs

Friday December 3, 2010 goes down in the record books as an unusual and dangerous day on the roads in Arlington Heights, Palatine, Mount Prospect and Schaumburg — counting seven crashes that killed two people — starting at about 7:00 a.m. …


Scene where a wrecked Oldsmobile came to a stop at Winston Drive just north of Palatine Road.

(1) Personal Injury Crash Arlington Heights-Palatine
Police and firefighter/paramedics from Arlington Heights and Palatine responded to a one-car crash that occurred near the Route 53-Palatine Road interchange about 7:00 a.m. Friday. The woman continued driving her severely damaged red Oldsmobile down an expressway exit ramp and drove it westbound to Winston Drive. An Arlington Heights police officer responding to Palatine Road and Route 53 corrected his response to Winston Drive, just north of Palatine Road where he discovered the wrecked car. The car was driven over one-half mile with severe front end damage and with at least a one-half-obscured windshield.

Arlington Heights firefighters were also responding to a report of a car fire, which was the same call. Palatine firefighter/paramedics returned Arlington Heights firefighters/paramedics.

Palatine police and firefighter/paramedics managed the crash scene.

One female was injured in the crash with minor injuries. She was transported to Northwest Community Hospital.

Illinois State police are investigating, and were on the scene at Winston Drive, since the crash occurred on Route 53.


(2) Fatal Crash: Prospect Heights Man Crashes Car Into Tree
Mount Prospect police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 7:50 a.m. to report of a man entrapped in a car vs. tree crash at Main and Memory, near Main and Highland Street in Mount Prospect. Police arrived first found Hector Nieto, Jr., 23, with severe trauma.

Witness reported seeing the driver’s Toyota hatchback head southbound on Main Street, and then spin out of control, off the road and into a tree.

Hector Nieto Jr., 23, of Prospect Heights and the driver and only occupant, was transported to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, where he was pronounced dead.

Southbound Main Street was closed at Kensington Road for several hours during a crash investigation by the Mt. Prospect police major accident investigation team.

Mount Prospect Police are urging citizens with information about the crash to call Mt. Prospect police at 847-870-5656.

(3) Personal Injury Crash: Dump Truck Roll on its Side Route 14 and Route 68
Palatine police and firefighter/paramedics responded to Northwest Highway and Dundee Road at 11:30 a.m. Friday. A semi-trailer dump truck filled with dirt and fill flipped on its side on the ramp that connects westbound Dundee Road with northwestbound Northwest Highway.

Firefighter-paaramedics transported the driver of the semi-trailer dump truck to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington for minor injuries.

The ramp was closed for an extended period while clean-up crews with end loaders cleared the scene.

(4) Second time Paramedics Respond to Palatine Road in Winston for Crash Injuries.
Palatine police and firefighter/paramedics responded just after 5:00 p.m. to a crash at Palatine Road and Winston Drive. One woman was injured in a crash there.

(5) Personal Injury Crash: Man Hits Pickup Truck and Flips His Oldsmobile
Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded at 5:19 p.m. to a rollover crash with entrapment at 1600 East Davis Street. A tan Oldsmobile sedan hit a parked white Dodge Ram and flipped after the collision. The Oldsmobile was eastbound when it hit the pickup truck, which was parked on the eastbound shoulder.

Firefighter/paramedics had the male accident victim extricated from his Oldsmobile, which was upside down on its roof in about 10 minutes. He was treated at the scene in the ambulance for an additional 10 minutes, and then transported to Northwest Community Hospital.

Davis Street was blocked eastbound at Arthur Avenue, and westbound at Northwest Highway for about 45 minutes. Northbound Arthur Avenue was backed up and congested more than usual after the crash.

(6) Personal Injury Crash: Northwest Highway and Rohlwing — One Car on the Tracks
Palatine police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 5:20 p.m. Friday to Route 14 and Rohlwing Road for a car crash with injuries, with one car on the railroad tracks or very close to the railroad tracks.

And finally as Schaumburg firefighter/paramedics were just wrapping up from a second alarm fire at Saratoga Apartments, 5550 Astor Lane in Rolling Meadows, they were called to a fatal crash near Woodfield …

(7) Fatal Crash: Southbound I-290/IL-53 Frontage Road and Woodfield Road
Schaumburg police and firefighter/paramedics responded to a T-bone crash. A black BMW SUV driven by a 51-year-old female, and southbound Frontage Road, collided with a green Chevy Malibu driven by a 61-year-old man, Robert Manley, 61, of Palatine, who was extricated from the car by firefighter/paramedics. An 18-year-old female was also injured in the Chevy Malibu.

Robert Manley was transported to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village and pronounced dead at 9:05 p.m. The 18-year-old female passenger and the 51-year-old female were transported to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights with non-life-threatening injuries,

The intersection was closed for an extended period as Schaumburg Police Department investigated the crash.
