Students gathered outside Marinette H.S. in Wisconsin awaiting the release of 23 of their schoolmates who were being held at gunpoint by a fellow student. One person who said he was familiar with the hostage taker described the teen as a loner.

UPDATE: Sophomore Samuel Hengel died at 10:44 a.m. from injuries of a self-inflicted gun shot.

UPDATE: 8:00 a.m. A 15-year-old student armed with at least two handguns held 23 classmates and a female social studies teacher hostage for nearly five hours. The youth offender shot himself as police closed in.

UPDATE: 8:31 p.m. All hostages released.

UPDATE 8:24 p.m. Five students released.

Marinette city police and Marinette County Sheriff’s deputies responded just before 4:00 p.m. Monday to a report from a high school administrator that a gunman burst into classroom at Marinette High School, 2139 Pierce Avenue, Marinette, Wisconsin.

An armed student is reported to be holding a classroom hostage at Marinette High School in Marinette, Wisconsin. There are no reports of injuries or shots fired.

Possibly 23 students and a teacher are being held hostage.

Parents were asked to respond to the Marinette county courthouse to await information on the situation.

Marinette is a city in and the county seat of Marinette County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 11,749 at the 2000 census.

  1. Anytime something like this occurs in a gun-free zone (assuming this school is) it should be mandatory life in prison.

    There is nothing worse than using arms against an unarmed group of people that are forced to be dis-armed by the government.

    These school things can turn out to be alot worse and in these rare occasions where everything comes out okay we need to start setting examples.

    If the firearm is not owned by the student prosecute the owner(s).
    If the ‘suspect’ is on a prescribed medication prosecute the doctor(s) if necessary.

    Almost all, if not all of school shootings that have occurred have been a result of children on dangerous mind altering prescription drugs that never ever should of had any access to firearms.
