Skokie police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 4:00 p.m. Thursday to a report of a golfer down at the Evanston Country Club golf course, 4401 Dempster Street in Skokie.

Another golfer discovered Larry Schad, a partner of Schad Diamond & Shedden, trapped under a golf cart. Paramedics responded to the victim with multiple crush injuries, apparently caused by an accident with the golf cart.

Golf carts weigh between 600 to 1,000 pounds.

According to a report from the Journal of Trauma, an estimated 48,255 injuries were treated in emergency departments in the U.S. for golf cart–related injuries during the study period from January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2005.

The highest injury rates observed in golf cart-related injuries were among 10 to 19 year-olds and individuals 80-years-old and older. Male patients had a higher injury rate than female patients, and whites had a higher rate than blacks or Asians. Contusions and abrasions were the most common diagnosis for the hip and lower extremity region; fractures were the most common diagnosis for shoulder and upper extremity region; and intracranial injuries, including concussions, subdural hematomas, and hemorrhage, were the most common diagnosis for head and neck region.

A report from an American Journal of Preventive Medicine study of The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System database found 147,696 golf cart-related injuries were treated in emergency departments in the United States for the period 1990 to 2006.

Larry Schad, 67, of Kenilworth is survived by his wife, Susan Schad; daughters Kathryn Reuter, Laura Schad and Julia Kearney; a son, John Schad, and two grandchildren.
