Extra Alarm HazMat Response for North Palos Fire Protection District on 95th St, 76th Ave, Tri-State

North Palos Fire Protection District requested and extra alarm (2nd Alarm) HazMat response about 8:30 a.m. Friday for a tanker rollover that is leaking sodium hydroxide at 95th Street, 76th Street and the Tri-State Tollway. The fire department response began about 7:00 a.m. Friday for a tanker truck rolled over with wires down.

Regarding sodium hydroxide, contact with metals can form flammable hydrogen gas. The solution is not flammable, but can decompose in heat to produce corrosive and toxic fumes.

If a fire occurs, an evacuation of one-half mile radius is activated. No word of any ignition or flames in the area.
