Gas Line Ruptures, Causes Fire That Kills 4, Destroys 53 Homes in San Bruno Near San Francisco

A massive fire in San Bruno, California killed six people, destroyed 53 homes and damaged 120 more. The cause is believed to be a ruptured natural gas line.

A huge explosion and fire about 6:35 p.m. PT killed four people and destroyed at least 53 homes in San Bruno, California — a suburb of San Francisco west of San Francisco International Airport. The fire also injured at least 15 people. One person thought the fire was a sign of judgment day, another described the fire as ‘hell on earth.’ Early news reports, stated a commercial airliner had crashed. Earlier reports stated six were killed.

Just after 7:00 p.m. firefighters were fighting a 6-alarm fire that was consuming a neighborhood. The center of the fire and explosion may be at Earl Avenue and Glenview Drive where ABC-7 San Francisco reports a 15-foot crater filled with water demolished an intersection across from a children’s playground.
