17 Killed, 24 Still Missing from Arkansas Campground Flood

The search for nearly two dozen people who disappeared after flash floods swept through a popular campground went from desperate to grim on Saturday, after teams that scoured miles of river and rugged wilderness found just two bodies.

At least 17 people were killed Friday after flash floods swept through their Arkansas campsites following a heavy rain. Water rose 20 feet in five hours in the Albert Pike Recreation area.

About 60 campers were rescued by emergency workers, another 24 were hospitalized.

The Little Missouri west of Caddo Gap rose to 23.5 feet after 7.6 inches of rain overnight. The water level had been 3 feet, and after the surge dropped back to 11.5 feet.
