Chicago Fire Department firefighters recovered the body of a child about 11:10 a.m. Sunday near a staging area at Francisco and Lawrence. The location is about 1.3 miles downstream from the location where 8 year-old Cashmere Castillo fell in the Chicago River during a game of tag.
Chicago police dogs trained to identify cadaver scent had targeted the area recently.
Recently Willy Castillo was searching for his son Cashmere at a river crossing in the 5100 block of North Ridgeway Avenue in the Albany Park neighborhood about 10 a.m. Saturday, May 22, 2010 while police and firefighters were searching elsewhere. Police asked him to get out of the water because of dangerous undertow and currents.
Castillo’s 8-year-old son disappeared Sunday, May 16, 2010 after he fell in the river during a game of tag with friends at Eugene Field Park.
Police and fire personnel had been searching by boat, with side-sonar devices and with divers in search of the boy’s body.
Sunday police found the body north of the body north of the Francisco and Lawrence location near River Park in the river — about one mile south of the location where Cashmere fell into the water.
