State Representatives John Fritchey and LaShawn Ford Call for Illinois National Guard to Help Reduce Violence in Chicago

The same number of U.S. troops killed in Iraq and Afghanistan combined (113 for same time period) matches the number of people killed violently in Chicago, according to State Representative John Fritchey. In order to reclaim communities from deadly violence and murders, he and State Representative La Shawn Ford are pushing for the deployment of the Illinois National Guard to patrol streets and help reduce violence by working side-by-side with Chicago police officers.

The representatives are seeking the support of the idea from Governor Pat Quinn, Mayor Richard Daley and Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis, who has concerns about the military, which would be under separate command. The plea was announced at a press conference on April 25, 2010.
