Is it a Noxious Crater from a Meteor? Fireball in Peru Leads People to Site with Noxious Gases

#ad▼

Saturday night, people near Carancas, Peru, in the Puno region of the Andes [MAP/SAT] about 1,300km (800 miles) south of the Peruvian capital, Lima, reported seeing a fireball in the sky heading toward the ground near them. The object hit the ground, leaving a 30m (98ft) wide and 6m (20ft) deep crater and released fetid, noxious gases.

People who visited the crater site then experienced headaches, eye problems, irritated skin, irritated throats, irritated nasal passages, nausea and vomiting.

The toxins sulphur and arsenic could possibly have been released from the reaction of the meteor with the ground. It is also possible that methane-rich organic matter from a small lake that may or may not have been caused by a meteor may have caused symptoms. A team of scientist has been summoned to investigate if the site does involve a meteorite.
