Kankakee River near South Washington Avenue bridge were the river flows from east to west.

Harry Smith, 29, and Curtis Malone 52, were in a bass boat in the Kankakee River just east of the Canadian National Railroad viaduct, south of the Kankakee Amtrak Station, and near South Washington Avenue bridge when the boat capsized and got tossed over the dam just before 10:00 a.m.

The Kankakee Fire Department launched a rescue boat just before 10:10 a.m. at Bird Park and were able to rescue the two men who managed to get themselves to waist-deep water. The men were pulled out of the water by 10:20 a.m. after an original report of the men floating down river. The staging area for rescuers was Kennedy and Court.

Both men were transported to Provena St. Mary’s Hospital where they were treated for hypothermia and released. One of the men also had a small laceration.
