Picnic, Plein Air and Pastimes: Celebrating Arlington Heights’ History will take place on the grounds of the Arlington Heights Historical Museum on Sunday, September 13 from 1:00-4:00pm. The Museum is located at 110 W. Fremont St. near downtown Arlington Heights. This free event celebrates our community’s history which can be found in the buildings and displays on the Museum grounds. ‘Plein air’ if French for ‘open air’ — particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors.

Pack a picnic lunch and head over to the Museum for the afternoon. Many activities have been planned for all. Loose Change and Friends, a different kind of Stringy Band, will perform and local artists will be working throughout the grounds. Activities include old-fashioned games such as checkers, Hoops, and Graces, old-time tableau photos with costumes and cow, art activities for all and a balloon twister, too.

The Historical Society will provide complementary root beer and popcorn. Don’t miss their Bake Sale of homemade goodies and the opportunity to purchase their recent cookbook, The Arlington Heritage Cookbook.

The 5th annual Plein Air event will also take place during this event Meet these talented artists of your community as they paint, draw and sculpt. Tour the current exhibit in the Heritage Gallery, “Arlington Artists on Display”, too. Young artists are encouraged to bring their art materials and work out-of-doors, too.

Antique appraisals will take place in the Coach House. Karl Gates will provide information and verbal appraisals of your family heirloom, knick knack or antique piece. A single item or small grouping of items is $5.

Tour guides will be stationed in the Muller and Banta homes on the grounds. Both historic homes are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Guides will provide interesting details about the families who lived within, current restorations and significant architecture.

This event is free to the community and is a great daytrip for those outside of Arlington Heights. The complex is accessible by train or car. Free parking is available in the commuter lot at Fremont and Vail St. The event takes place rain or shine.
