The audio capture on a Nest residential surveillance camera picked up the sound of the violent crash about a block and a half away from the incident. The audio picked up tires screeching for roughly 2 seconds, followed by a series of loud bangs involving the violent crash.

Police report Butler’s Range Rover was traveling at very high speed about 2:30 AM on January 31, 2018 when Rasual Butler lost control of the SUV and struck several parking meters, slammed into a wall and flipped two times before coming to a stop.

The vehicle had been westbound on Ventura Boulevard before leaving the roadway, hitting a concrete barrier, and jumping over the barrier. The Range Rover came to rest in the parking lot of the Studio City Place shopping center. The Range Rover was barely recognizable, and the concrete barrier was also damaged.

The stretch of Ventura Boulevard involves a sharp curve, and advanced warning is marked with a CURVE sign and a 30 MPH limit sign in yellow. The rest of Ventura Boulevard is marked with a 35 MPH speed limit. The entire four-lane road is located in a mixed commercial, retail and residential neighborhood. Analysis of the extent of damage to the vehicle would lead to estimation of the vehicle speed in the range of 60 to 110 mph.

The Studio City neighborhood in Los Angeles is protected by Los Angeles City Fire Department (LAFD) Station 78.

Rasual Butler, who grew up in Philadelphia, played for the Miami Heat, New Orleans Hornets, Los Angeles Clippers, Chicago Bulls, Toronto Raptors, Indiana Pacers, Washington Wizards and San Antonio Spurs. Butler played for the Chicago Bulls in 2011.
