Criminal Sexual Assault: Foot Pursuit and Search Overnight Near Harvard and Oakton

SUSPECT CAPTURED FOUR HOURS LATER …
Arlington Heights police responded to a neighbor’s call to 9-1-1 just before 2 a.m. after the neighbor heard a woman’s call for help in a struggle with a male at the intersection of Oakton Avenue and Harvard Avenue. Police arrived and interrupted an apparent criminal sexual assault and/or battery in progress — possibly near Oakton and Patton Avenue. A foot pursuit began possibly near Patton Avenue where a police officer left his squad car as he took off running after the offender. The offender fled northbound on Harvard Avenue and was last seen running westbound through a backyard in the 1100 block of North Harvard Avenue. Police were searching backyards, north and west of Harvard and Oakton between 2:10 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. The Cook County Sheriff K-9 unit assisted Arlington Heights police in the search for the suspect. Several police squads were on the scene and involved in the search.

The offender was described as a tall male/black, having a thin to medium build. He was wearing a dark-blue Chicago Bears jersey with number 34 on the back. He was also wearing blue jean shorts.

A female victim was transported to Northwest Community Hospital from the northeast corner of Oakton Avenue and Harvard Avenue.

Arlington Heights police are investigating leads for the suspect and are also investigating the crime scene for evidence at Oakton Avenue and Harvard Avenue.

Just after 6:10 a.m. an Arlington Heights police officer spotted the criminal sexual assault/battery suspect walking westbound on Sigwalt Street, west of Ridge Avenue. Another pursuit began and headed north on Salem Avenue from Sigwalt Street. The suspect was captured by an Arlington Heights police officer in a backyard near the southeast corner of Salem Avenue and Wing Street. The address had no apparent connection to the suspect. The suspect was arrested and transported to the Arlington Heights police department jail just after 6:20 a.m.

UPDATE: July 1, 2009 6:15 p.m.
Although area police officers were alerted of a possible criminal sexual assault suspect at large, as of just over 40 hours after the initial call, the suspect has not been charged with criminal sexual assault.

  1. Saw yellow tape and the squad car at Oakton & Harvard on my run this morning at 5:30 am. It just seems like Arlington Heights has seen too many incidents like this over the last year.

  2. Looks like Arlington Heights police officers worked diligently on this case. Note! Anyone who tries anything on my morning run in Arlington Heights: you can be sure a substantial amount of your DNA will be under my finger nails!
