Two women were killed and a Cook County Sheriff’s officer was injured in a crash at Harlem Avenue and Dempster Street at the border of Niles and Morton Grove Thursday morning September 5, 2018 at about 5:47 a.m.

The driver, Ludwika Moskal, age 69 of Norridge, and a passenger, Helena Lukasik, age 64 of Chicago were seriously injured in the crash about two miles east of Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. Both women were transported to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Morton Grove’s Engine 5’s crew discovered the crash and immediately requested an extrication response and three ambulances. Morton Grove police, Niles police and Morton Grove firefighter/paramedics responded about 5:49 AM Thursday September 6, 2018 to the report of the serious pin-in crash at Dempster Street and Harlem Avenue in Niles, Morton Grove, Il. Morton Grove and Niles firefighter/paramedics worked to extricate the two women from the Honda, and treat all three patients, including the Cook County Sheriff’s deputy.

A 47-year-old Cook County Sheriff’s officer was transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say the officer’s squad car was eastbound on Dempster Street when it struck the Honda, which was southbound on Harlem Avenue when the two sedans crashed in the intersection. The Honda was hit on the passenger side, and was pushed

“This is what we would call a T-bone crash. Preliminarily, weather may have been a factor, but until we get all the details back from the investigation, and we get toxicology, we won’t know the whole details until then.”

— Niles Police Commander Robert Tornabene

The intersection was closed for hours after the crash, opening about 11:01 a.m. The NORTAF Major Crash Assistance Team was on scene and is continuing to investigate the crash.

Investigators said it’s too early to comment on the cause of the crash.

Police are attempting to review all surveillance cameras available in the area.

The Cook County Sheriff’s office reported they are also investigating the incident, and Cook County investigators were also on the scene after the crash. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office say the officer was not responding to a call when the crash occurred.

According to Google Street view images captured October 2017 and November 2017 the Speed Limit on eastbound Dempster Street is 35 MPH, and the Speed Limit on southbound Harlem Avenue is 30 MPH.

The crash is the second serious crash involving a Cook County Sheriff’s squad car in a week. On Thursday August 30, 2018 a Cook County Sheriff’s squad car was involved in a serious intersection crash and ignited with a fire that consumed almost the front half of the squad car about 3:41 a.m. at Golf Road and Barrington Road in Hoffman Estates.
