Critical fire weather conditions have continued across much of the Chicagoland forecast area late this morning and this afternoon. South winds have been gusting 20 to 25 mph, and infrequently to 30 mph across the northwest area of Chicagoland.

Red Flag Warning in effect from April 30, 12:00 PM CDT until April 30, 08:00 PM CDT

Dew points have struggled to rise through the day with a reading of 16°F at 4:51 a.m. at O’Hare, and a rise to only 25°F (dew point) in the afternoon. Relative Humidity (RH) was only 14% at 2:51 p.m. and 3:51 p.m. at O’Hare.

Several small mulch fires or wood chip fires were reported in the northwest suburbs, including one in front of LA Fitness and one near Arlington Heights Road and Rand Road. Both were extinguished in a short time with only one fire engine on the scene. Libertyville firefighters were dispatched about 3:00 p.m. to a brush fire near St Marys Rd between Oak Trail Drive and Old School Road in the Mettawa/Libertyville area.
