Naperville Police Charge Driver in Fatal Crash at Fort Hill Drive and 75th Street with Aggravated Use of Electronic Communication Device

RAMIRO FONSECA, 26, OF ITASCA WAS KILLED WHILE CHANGING A TIRE

Naperville Police on Friday, February 16, 2018, secured charges against the driver of a Subaru Impreza that struck and killed a 26-year-old man while he was changing a flat tire near the intersection of Fort Hill Drive and 75th Street in November 2017. Naperville police announced charges connected to use of an electric communication device on Thursday, February 22, 2018, but did no specify whether crash involved texting or talking on a cell phone.

Steven R. Holmes, 28, of Millington, Ill., was charged with one count of Aggravated Use of Electronic Communication Device, a class 4 felony, and Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident. Millington is located about 20 miles southwest of Naperville.

On Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at approximately 12:01 a.m., the Naperville Police and Fire Departments responded to a report of a crash at 75th Street and Fort Hill Drive on Naperville’s west side. The crash involved a 2004 Blue Kia Optima driven by Ramiro Fonseca, 26, of Itasca and a 2017 Black Subaru Impreza driven by Holmes. The initial investigation indicated that the Subaru Impreza was eastbound on 75th towards Book Road when it struck Fonseca, who was outside the vehicle changing a tire.

Fonseca was transported to Edward Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The Naperville Traffic Unit trained in accident investigation and reconstruction responded to the scene to investigate the accident, resulting in the charges against Holmes.
