Dixon Rural, Mount Morris Oregon firefighters and firefighters from other nearby communities responded with Ogle County Sheriff deputies just after midnight on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 to a report of smoke in the basement at a house in the block of 200 Miami Drive in Lost Nation. The fire was initially report at 322 Wild Cherry Drive in Lost Nation.

The Ogle County Sheriff received a 911 call just after midnight at the house outside Dixon in the unincorporated gated community of Lost Nation, the sheriff’s department said. Firefighters arrived to find “a fully-engulfed residential structure fire,” according to Ogle County sheriff’s office. Lost Nation is located about 7 miles south of Oregon, Illinois, and about 25 miles southwest of Rockford.

The house fire had to be attacked as a defensive operation with no interior attack possible because of the extent of the fire. All six occupants of the residence were found dead in several locations in the house after the fire was extinguished. Ogle County Coroner Louis Finch reported the bodies were so badly burned that dental records will be required for identification of the victims.

The family of six included two parents, four children, a cat and a dog. The children all attended public schools in the area.

A MABAS Division 18 Box Alarm was activated at 12:12 a.m.

The extra alarm fire was elevated to the second level at 12:22 a.m. Firefighters from 10 fire departments responded to the fire.

The Ogle County sheriff’s office, Illinois State Fire Marshal and Illinois State Police are investigating the cause of the fire.

Lost Nation has a population of 708, according to the 2010 census.
