Revered Northwest Community Hospital Radiologist Harold Gianopulos, M.D. passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2017 in South Barrington at age 81. Dr. Harold Gianopulos was an important and eminent Radiologist as Northwest Community Hospital grew from a small community hospital to a large suburban hospital campus. He was a dedicated, expert and kind Radiologist, reading many Emergency Room requests in the Radiology Department for trauma patients and patients with medical emergencies with the concern of a nearby caretaker, not a remote professional.

Dr. Gianopulos worked as a Radiologist for Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, 1970 to 2002. He was Board certified in Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, and Nuclear Radiology.

“Dr. G’s” career spanned the introduction of the CT scan and the MRI. The first commercial CT scanners were introduced to the medical profession in 1971 and were available to patients in Chicagoland hospitals in the mid-late 1970s. The first clinically useful image from an MRI of a patient was reported in August 1980 at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. Hospitals in the Chicago area began to use MRIs in the mid-late 1980s. Initially MRIs were parked in mobile trailers, just outside the hospital.

Harold Gianopulos is survived by his spouse Mary, whom he married June 12, 1960 in Chicago; children, Harold “Skip” (Gayle) Gianopulos Jr., Stephen Gianopulos and Jennifer (Jeff) Griffin; grandchildren, Jorah Griffin, Stephanie Gianopulos, Jessica Gianopulos, Allison Gianopulos, Janai Griffin, Jakin Griffin and Cassidy Gianopulos; Siblings, John (Vasiliki) Gianopulos, Joyce (Carl) Stanton and Despe (Chris) Sterious; brother in law John Galanes.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Irene Galanes; and his sister in law Mary Gianopulos.
