St. Charles police responded about 5:12 p.m. Friday March 10, 2017 to 450 South 1st Street in downtown St. Charles to reports from a husband and wife that the husband shot their two female children. Police arrived to find the father and two daughters dead, and the mother injured with a gunshot wound to the leg.

Police initially believed the shooting to be a murder-suicide by a man who fatally shot his teenage twin daughters and wounded his wife before killing himself.

On Sunday, March 12, 2017, Deputy Chief David Kintz said that Randall Coffland, age 48, told a 911 dispatcher Friday that he had just shot his 16-year-old daughters, Brittany and Tiffany Coffland, and his 46-year-old wife, Anjum Coffland, and that he was going to shoot and kill himself.

St Charles police arrived to find the bodies of the Randall Coffland and his daughters. The three were shot once in the head. Anjum Coffland was shot in her legs and is expected to survive.

Randall Coffland called 911 at 5:12 p.m. — moments after he fatally shot his twin daughters.

Their mother, Anjum — after she was shot and wounded — simultaneously called 911 to report the shooting.

St. Charles police released the 911 audio at Sunday’s press conference. Police disclosed that the girls’ father fired the fatal shots, shooting each of girl once in the head.

“We don’t have anything strewn about to show that there was a fight. The coroner will have to take a look at what state they were in on Monday and find out what happened,” said Deputy Chief David Kintz. When asked where the victims were located, Kintz said, “One was on the couch, one was in the bedroom.”

Police said the estranged couple was still married, but were living separately, and that the girls were living with their father in the condominium on 1st Street. It was not known why Anjum was at the apartment at the time of the shooting. Police have only spoken to Anjum Coffland briefly.

The weapon used in the shooting is believed to have been legally purchased.
