CHICAGO BEARS RADIO -- WBBM Newsradio 780 "Traffic on the 8's"

The March 12-14, 2017 snow storm hit with two periods with a short break of about one hour around midnight Monday March 13 to Tuesday March 14. The first period was snow associated with a cold front, and the second period was associated with lake effect snow.

Cold Front Snow
A total of 1 inch of snow fell in Arlington Heights from about 9:00 PM Sunday March 12, 2017 until 11:00 PM Monday March 13, 2017. The Cold Front Snow period lasted about 26:00 (hours:minutes). No snow cover was on the ground before the Cold Front Snow period.

The Cold Front Snow caused partial accumulation on paved areas. Some warmer pavement had zero accumulation.

The snowfall was much less than the 4-10 inches that was forecast for the area. A second Lake Effect Snow period resulted in much greater snowfall.

Lake Effect Snow
A total of 7.5 inches of Lake Effect Snow fell from midnight Monday/Tuesday until about 1:00 p.m. Tuesday — a period of about 13 hours.

Combined Snow Periods
The storm total for Arlington Heights was 8.5 inches as recorded by Arlingtoncardinal.com (not official). The snow cover was 8.5 inches in the shade at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday (3/14/2017) and at the end of storm time at 1:00 p.m. Areas in the sun were already showing signs of shrinking snow cover by 10:30 a.m. Rapid melting occurred on sunlit paved areas with some areas showing less than two inches of snow cover by noon. Some sunlit paved areas showed zero snow cover between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

All grassy areas and paved/shaded areas had a snow cover of 5-6 inches at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday — a shrinkage of 2-3 inches from the storm total.

The snow quality was dry and light — not good packing snow, but easy for shoveling. The air temperature and sunlight caused snow to convert to good packing snow with higher moisture per volume. Tuesday’s high was 27°F at O’Hare.

The first round of snow caused partial accumulation on paved areas. The second round caused accumulation with total coverage on paved and grassy areas.

According to the National Weather Service Chicago, the 24 hour snowfall for the official Chicago observation was 4.9″ observed at Chicago O’Hare International Airport at 7:00 a.m. March 14th, 2017. The storm total was recorded at 7.5″ as of 1:00 p.m. Tuesday March 14th, 2017.
