Interstate 80 Police Pursuit of BMW Terminates, But Ends in Crash and Burn Near I-55

Illinois State Police and Minooka and Troy FPD firefighter/paramedics responded about 9:52 PM Saturday, November 12, 2016 to a rollover crash with injuries and vehicle fire near I-80 WB and mile marker 126 Minooka, Il. The crash followed a police pursuit that was terminated at about mile marker 124 on eastbound I-80.

An Illinois State Police District 17 unit was following a stolen dark blue BMW with a female/black occupant at 90 MPH on I-80 EB at mile post 118 late Saturday night. The vehicle failed to stop during an attempted police traffic stop. Illinois State Police District 5 were alerted as a pursuit developed and headed toward their district.

Police at eastbound mile marker 119 initiated a traffic stop about 9:34 p.m. A second vehicle, a silver Chevrolet Malibu, was also associated with the pursuit that shortly after 9:34 p.m.

Police reported the pursuit advanced to eastbound I-80 at Morris at 9:36 p.m.

The police pursuit was terminated at 9:37 p.m. when the BMW was described going over 100 MPH at eastbound Mile Marker 124.

A crash with injuries, ejection and fire occurred following the terminated pursuit. The suspect (crash victim) was in the stolen dark blue BMW after Illinois State Police pursuit was terminated, but was ejected from the vehicle during the crash.

Police reported the vehicle crashed at mile Post 126 at 9:38 p.m. The vehicle rolled into oncoming westbound lanes and ignited to a fully-involved car fire. (The crash may have been further west near the I-80 curve about 1-2 miles west of I-55).

A LifeStar medevac helicopter was alerted but was notified to stand down.

Minooka Engine 1312’s crew lead out from the eastbound side of I-80 in protective position and worked to extinguish the vehicle fire.

Troy FPD paramedics had patient contact with the crash victim about 9:54 p.m.

All westbound lanes wereshut down, and partial shutdown of eastbound lanes occurred with fire equipment in protective positions.

The fire was declared out at 9:55 p.m.

Troy Fire Protection District Ambulane 2214 transported the patient (suspect) with Advanced Life Support to Morris Hospital by 10:03 p.m.

The silver Chevrolet Malibu that was observed with the BMW was also reported stolen and was last seen on eastbound I-80 near Harlem Avenue, Tinley Park.
