A male teenager drowned Friday after he went below the water surface south of Waukegan Municipal Beach in a channel designated for boats. The search for the boy, age 14-16, began just after 3:00 p.m. and lasted until about 8:30 p.m. when he was found in water about 20 feet deep.

A MABAS Dive Box, which was eventually brought to elevated levels, was activated at about 4:19 p.m. Divers, boats and technicians with side-sonar scanners responded to the Waukegan Harbor area.

Police learned the teen may have tried to swim across the channel south of the beach with a group of friends.
