Earthquake, Aftershocks Strike Southern Japan — Mashiki Hardest Hit

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake has hit Southern Japan. CNN’s Jonathan Mann reports.

Five women and four men were killed and at least 860 people were injured by a magnitude 6.5 earthquake that destroyed houses and buckled roads in southern Japan. At least fifty-three people were seriously injured.

One man in his 20s died, other victims were in their 50s. One woman killed was in her 90s. Eight of the nine killed were from Mashiki.

1,600 soldiers were assigned to the relief and rescue efforts.

The epicenter was about 800 miles southwest of Tokyo.

Several aftershocks were also reported.
