NCAA D1 Basketball: Winthrop Eagles 67, Presbyterian Blue Hose 53, Leading Scorer Prospect High Grad Jimmy Gavin

Arlington Heights resident and Prospect High School graduate Jimmy Gavin, who never played even a minute of varsity high school basketball, led the Winthrop Eagles with 21 points, including five 3-pointers. He also had eight rebounds and three steals.

Teammate Xavier Cooks scored 19 points to help second-seeded Winthrop beat No. 10 seed Presbyterian 67-53 in the quarterfinals of the Big South Conference tournament on Friday night. Winthrop (22-8) had 18 assists on 23 made field goals.

The Winthrop Eagles were behind 6-0 at the beginning of the game, but took a 24-19 lead into halftime. A 3-pointer by Keon Johnson put them up 41-24 with 14:58 to play.

Presbyterian (11-20) used a 17-4 run to pull within five about seven minutes later, but Jimmy Gavin answered with a pair of 3-pointers to take the lead to 53-42 with 6:37 left. Winthrop kept the lead at about a 10 point margin until the end of the game.

DeSean Murray led the Presbyterian Blue Hose with 24 points. Ed Drew scored 10 with 11 rebounds.

The NCAA Rating percentage Index (RPI) for Winthrop is 126 out of 351.

Winthrop is in first place in the Big South Conference Standings with a 13-5 record in conference and 22-8 overall.

Winthrop will face No. 6 seed Gardner-Webb in the semifinals at 2:00 p.m. today on ESPN3.
