CSX Freight Train Derails in Downtown Indianapolis — Possibly from High Winds

Indianapolis police and firefighters responded about 4:30 p.m. Friday near the intersection of North College Avenue and East Maryland Street after several cars of a CSX freight train cars derailed near a construction site in downtown Indianapolis. The railroad cars were carrying wheat and petroleum lubricant.

Indianapolis Fire Department reports no one was injured and no hazardous materials were spilled.

Officials suspect strong winds contributed to the derailment Friday afternoon near the intersection of North College Avenue and East Maryland Street.

The National Weather Service reported wind gusts of about 40 mph were recorded around the that of the derailment.
