Architect Selected for New Arlington Heights Police Station

At its February 15th meeting, the Village Board approved hiring Legat Architects for designing the new Police Station. At a cost of $1.65 million Legat Architects, with over 50 years of serving public sector clients, will team up with McClaren Wilson Lawrie to create plans for a new facility. McClaren Wilson Lawrie is an architectural firm that specializes in Police Station and Public Safety facilities throughout the country.

The existing 38,000-square-foot Police building, which opened in 1979, is deteriorating and no longer adequately serves the operational needs of a 24/7, 365 days a year Department. The building at 200 E. Sigwalt Avenue lacks space and is in need of significant mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) repairs and replacement, just to maintain it as a serviceable building.

After preparing a feasibility study and updating a 2010 space needs study, it was determined in September, 2015 that a new Police facility of 70,000 square feet would adequately serve the department’s needs. The new building will be built on the existing municipal campus and it’s anticipated that construction will begin in 2017.

The feasibility study estimated that the new facility could cost $27.9 million for construction only. Last month, the Village Board approved a $32.9 million bond for the Police Station project.

Next steps for the project is to hire a construction manager to oversee the project work, and to find a temporary home for the police department until a new facility is completed.
