A cave-in of a restaurant parking lot in Mississippi swallowed 12 cars and now experts are expected to begin work Monday to determine the cause of the weekend collapse, authorities said.

Meridian police and firefighters responded about 7:15 p.m. Saturday to a collapse of a parking lot at a newly-opened IHOP restaurant. Customers heard a series of loud booms, then the electricity went out at the restaurant.

The hole is measured about 50 feet wide and almost 400-600 feet long.

No injuries were reported.

The Meridian area received about 3 inches of rain over the weekend and almost 10 inches in the last two weeks.

The cave-in appears to be aligned with an underground culvert, which may have collapsed. Technically the collapse may not be an actual sinkhole.
