CHICAGO BEARS RADIO -- WBBM Newsradio 780 "Traffic on the 8's"

VIDEO: Accident investigation by Schaumburg Police Department and the Major Case Assistance Team on Springinsguth Road at the south intersection with Hartmann Drive about 11:30 p.m.

A fatal crash that occurred at Springinsguth Road and Hartmann Drive (south intersection) involved a fleeing hit-and-driver from a previous crash. The crash killed the hit-and-run offender, injured his passenger, and killed the driver of the second vehicle involved in the crash.

The female driver of the car that was hit by the offender was pronounced dead at the scene. She is identified as Erin Semerad of Schaumburg. The hit-and-run driver, whose identity has not been released, and his female passenger were transported to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. The male driver died at the hospital, and his female passenger is expected to recover.

The other victim of the first crash followed the offending driver, but lost sight of the offending vehicle until the second crash was discovered. Police did not specify where the first crash occurred, and did not specify the distance between the two crashes.

Schaumburg police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 7:08 PM Monday to the fatal crash at Hartmann Drive and Springinsguth Road Schaumburg, Il. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that on male crash victim did not have a pulse.

Police officers first on the scene reported two people trapped. Extra fire department crews were dispatched to the scene for extrication operations.

Engine 53’s fire crew on the scene reported two vehicles with severe damage, and soon afterwards reported they had two people trapped.

One vehicle had severe front-end damage and a Mitsubishi sedan had severe damage at the driver’s side door.

One patient was transported from the scene in Ambulance 53 about 7:28 p.m., and one patient was transported from the scene in Ambulance 51 about 7:36 p.m.

The car driven by Semerad was covered with a tarp until her body was removed.

Early Tuesday morning the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office reported one person died at the scene and one person died at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.

The Major Case Assistance Team was called to the scene for an extended crash investigation. Investigators were working past midnight with Springinsguth Road closed in both directions near Hartmann Drive.

One vehicle was apparently southbound at high speed on Springinsguth Road resulting in the Mitsubishi sedan being hit on the driver’s side near the south intersection of Springinsguth Road and Hartmann Drive. The crash occurred near the crown of a small hill on Springinsguth Road. Semerad may have had difficulty seeing the oncoming vehicle coming up the hill and may have misjudged the speed of the oncoming vehicle before attempting a left in front of the fleeing vehicle.

Both crashed vehicles were stopped about 90 feet south of the south intersection of Hartmann Drive and Springinsguth Road. The Mitsubishi was on the east side parkway, off road. The other vehicle was facing north in the southbound lanes of Springinsguth Road. A track of automotive fluids traced the path of both vehicles to resting positions south of the intersection.

Springinsguth Road was opened sometime early Tuesday.
