Back to School … this is one of the time periods that create opportunities for criminals to take advantage of distracted shoppers. Two cases of wallet or purse thefts were reported last week at the Goodwill Store at Dryden Avenue and Rand Road. This video from FOX 2 Detroit is from 2013. A 90-year-old woman was checking produce at the Waterford Meijer store when another woman walked away with her cart with the victim’s purse in the cart. There was $1,200 in cash inside.

The woman was arrested and sentenced in October 2013 to 3-15 years in prison. The long sentence was applied because she was a repeat offender.

You really can’t let your purse or valuables out of your sight. Watch for engaging conversation too. Teams of criminals might involve one person asking you for help or just striking up a conversation, while another grabs your purse.
