Severe Storm in Boone County and McHenry County; Cloud Top Headed to Arlington Hts Diminished from 42K to 11K

A severe thunderstorm indicated by radar as a mesocyclone entered McHenry County about 8:59 p.m. Storms are expected to arrive in Arlington Heights, Palatine, Buffalo Grove and other northwest suburbs by 10:10 p.m.

UPDATE: The initial “X1” Storm has diminished to 11,000 foot top and has a 0 percent chance of hail at 9:42 pm. The more severe storm is tracking toward Kane County.

The “X1” storm radar image indicated the cloud top grew back to 30,000 feet by 10:10 p.m. with 0 (zero) percent chance of severe hail, but a 90 percent chance of hail with a maximum size of .50 inch.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was activated at 10:13 p.m. in far northwest Cook County west of Arlington Heights. Cities and villages included in the the Severe Thunderstorm Warning at 10:13 p.m. included Barrington, Carpentersville, Elgin, Hoffman Estates, Inverness, Schaumburg, Sleepy Hollow, Streamwood and West Dundee.

The trailing edge of the storms have passed the area and have diminished to minimal rain shower except in Elgin, Hoffman Estates, and the Elburn and Kaneville area where possible severe thunderstorms are still indicated.

The storm (X1) was indicated by radar to have a cloud top of 42,000 feet with a 30% chance of severe hail with maximum hail size of 1.25 inch. At 9:00 p.m. there was a 100 percent chance of hail. The estimated time of arrival (ETA) to Palatine Road in Arlington is calculated 70 miles away at 8:59 p.m. — traveling at 39 knots, the storm would arrive in 69 minutes, or at 10:08 p.m.

At 9:12 p.m. the storm decreased to 40,000 foot cloud tops.

At 9:22 p.m. an adjacent cloud top to the west of the above storm mentioned is estimated at 42,000 feet with a 50 percent chance of severe hail with a maximum hail size of 1.75 inch.

Trained spotters spotted a funnel cloud — reported sighted in Boone County about 3 miles north of IL-76 and IL-173 with quarter size hail. However no Tornado Warning was activated by the National Weather Service.

This storm is heading toward the northwest suburbs.
