Winter Weather Advisory for Chicagoland Christmas Eve; Only 0.6 Inch Forecast for Arlington Heights

Chicagoland weather radar shows rain and drizzle moving north-northeast, but east of Chicagoland, except for south suburbs where there is rain and drizzle. The storm track has shifted further east than the expected track from Saturday’s models.

Snow is expected to start about 10:00 a.m. with peak snowfall rate at about noon. Snowfall is forecast to taper off after 4:00 p.m. and end between 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. Total accumulation forecast is 0.6 inch for Arlington Heights.

Areas near the Indiana border have the best potential for heavy snow.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN CHICAGO HAS ISSUED A WINTER
WEATHER ADVISORY FOR SNOW…WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM NOON TODAY TO
9 PM CST THIS EVENING. THE WINTER STORM WATCH IS NO LONGER IN
EFFECT.

* TIMING…RAIN LOOKS TO TRANSITION TO WET SNOW ACROSS PORTIONS OF
THE AREA THIS AFTERNOON…WITH A NARROW BAND OF MODERATE TO
HEAVY WET SNOW POSSIBLE. SNOW WILL THEN COME TO AN END FROM WEST
TO EAST EARLY THIS EVENING. AREAS NEAR THE INDIANA BORDER INTO
NORTHWEST INDIANA HAVE THE BEST POTENTIAL FOR HEAVIER SNOW.

* SNOW RATES…UP TO AN 1 INCH PER HOUR.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS…1 TO 4 INCHES…WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS
POSSIBLE UNDER THE NARROW BAND. HIGHEST AMOUNTS FAVORED OVER
NORTHWEST INDIANA.

* WINDS…WEST WINDS 15 TO 20 MPH WITH GUSTS AROUND 25 MPH.

* MAIN IMPACT…UNTREATED ROADS WILL BECOME SNOW OR SLUSH
COVERED IN PARTS OF THE AREA…RESULTING IN DIFFICULT TRAVEL.
ANY HEAVIER SNOW SHOWERS WILL ALSO CAUSE REDUCED VISIBILITIES.

* OTHER IMPACTS…THE HEAVY WET NATURE OF THE SNOW WILL MAKE IT
DIFFICULT TO SHOVEL.
